AfC-ECD is born out of the city administration’s ambitious “Children: The Future Hope of Addis Ababa” Early Childhood Development program that aims to transform Addis Ababa into Africa’s most welcoming and nurturing place for young children and their carers – simply put, the best city in Africa to raise children.

Recognizing the long-lasting impact of early childhood development on children and their future, AfC-ECD strives to offer comprehensive services to every child in the city and beyond.

Our mission is to advance early childhood development across Africa, ensuring every child receives the care and support they need to thrive. AfC-ECD aspires to be a hub of innovation and learning, spearheading initiatives to make Addis Ababa the most child-friendly city in Africa. With a focus on collaboration, integrity, and inclusivity, we aim to reach marginalized communities and enhance the lives of seven million children by 2028. Through partnerships with governments, civil society, academia, and donors, we believe in creating sustainable solutions that will have a lasting impact. Leadership and Governance

AfC-ECD is led by a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about ECD and committed to working alongside key stakeholders to achieve our strategic goals and change the lives of children across Africa.

The leadership team is comprised of a Managing Board including our Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officers who are also supported by an international Advisory Committee.

He has been serving as CEO since September 1, 2023. He has extensive experience in the health sector, including his work as a State Minister of Health between 2005 and 2018 and senior advisor to the minister for about five years from 2018 to 2023. He has a proven track record of success in developing and implementing policies and programs, and he has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the early childhood care and education sector in Ethiopia.

Dr. Kebede also served on the board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDs, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. This demonstrates his commitment to global health and his understanding of the importance of early childhood development in the fight against poverty and disease. In these roles, he provided leadership to the health sector, set policies and implementation strategies, and oversaw key health sector missions. Along with the leadership of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Women & Children Affairs, and development partners, he played a key role in the development of the first national policy framework for early childhood care and education in Ethiopia which was launched in 2010. Dr. Kebede holds Medical Doctor, Master of Public Health and Management Certificates.

Dr. Meseret Zelalem MD is a seasoned Pediatrician and Assistant professor of pediatrics and child health , serving as the Chief Programs and Research Officer at the Center. She began her professional journey as a lecturer, later advancing to Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health and Medical Director at UoG College of Medicine and Health Sciences. With over 16 years of experience, she has excelled in various roles including in Leadership, as a senior medical specialist, medical director, and Institutional Board of Review Chairperson. Dr. Meseret's expertise spans research, academia, clinical service, leadership and community services, with a focus on Reproductive, maternal, child, and adolescent health and nutrition. She has contributed significantly to community outreach programs, benefiting thousands of children. Notable achievements include her roles as a COVDP secretary, GAVI steering committee member for Zero Dose, and advisor to various initiatives including WHO-Africa Regional office for RMNCAH. Dr. Meseret's passion lies in women's leadership, girl's empowerment, and child well-being, showcased through her advocacy and speaking engagements. Currently, she is dedicated to advancing Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiatives, aiming to break intergenerational poverty and create a conducive environment for every child's growth and development.

MD is a seasoned Pediatrician and Assistant professor of pediatrics and child health
Fetiya Temam serves as the Chief Operations Officer at the Center, overseeing operational excellence and strategic vision to ensure effective program delivery. With a diverse academic background and extensive experience in operations, finance, and leadership, including roles such as Finance Manager, Financial Consultant, Compliance Director, and Group Deputy CEO, Fetiya brings a wealth of knowledge in organizational dynamics and business strategy. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting, and is a qualified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Additionally, she holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA), enhancing her strategic leadership abilities. Fetiya is dedicated to cultivating a culture of transparency, accountability, and integrity within the organization.
